Do not believe in anything simply because you have heard it. Do not believe in anything simply because it is spoken and rumored by many. Do not believe in anything simply because it is found written in your religious books. Do not believe in anything merely on the authority of your teachers and elders. Do not believe in traditions because they have been handed down for many generations. But after observation and analysis, when you find that anything agrees with reason and is conducive to the good and benefit of one and all, then accept it and live up to it. –Buddha
어떤 것도 당신이 들었다는 이유로 믿지 말라. 많은 사람들이 말하고 전한다고 해서 어떤 것을 믿지 말라. 당신이 믿는 종교의 경전에 나온다는 이유로 어떤 것을 믿지 말라. 당신의 선생님이나 연장자들의 권위를 근거로 믿지 말라. 여러 세대 동안 전해 내려왔다고 해서 전통을 믿지 말라. 그러나 관찰과 분석을 통해서, 당신 스스로 어떤 것이 이성에 합당하고 모든 사람들의 선(善)과 이익에 기여한다는 것을 알게 된다면 그것을 받아들이고 그에 맞추어 살도록 하라. –부처
